Traditional Durban Fish cake

Ever feel for that hot, spicy fish cake, made the way mum made it……. Another great side dish to have over drinks and yes of course a great Thunee game. Don’t forget to sprinkle lemon juice with each piece. Thanks to mum and her years of using this recipe, why don’t you give it a try? Ingredients:

  • 2 fish of choice medium size (can get from your local butcher cleaned and deboned)

  • Boil fish of choice

  • 3 small potatoes

  • Make Hard mash

  • 3 small Onions

  • Dhania 4 hands full cut fine

  • Finely chopped 6 green Chilies (use based on desired heat level)

  • Crushed dry chilies

  • Mint optional

  • Baking powder

  • Salt

  • 2 Eggs


Method

  • Place flaked fish in a bowl (E.g. 2 cups hake)

  • Mix all ingredients (measurements are approximate)

  • 1 cup hard mash, 1 cup onions, 2 hands full cut Dhania, 2 teaspoons crushed dry chilies, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 and half teaspoon salt check for taste

  • Add 2 beaten egg and Mix well

  • Taste dough as it might need salt or chilies (use your own method to taste flavor J)

  • If reached desired taste, mix both parts and let sit for 10 minutes in fridge

  • Make small round balls and then Flatten to desired size (3” recommended)

  • Add to oil and fry until golden brown

  • Take out from oil and place onto tray or plate. Do not place paper to drain

*Let sit to col prior to serving
